Two hours into the morning rush, Mary’s boss bellowed at her from the kitchen. She ran in, not used to him yelling at her, but stopped at the sight of him holding out the phone.

“For me? Oh, I am so sorry—”

“It’s your kid. Talk to her.” He wasn’t yelling. He wasn’t angry. His expression was enough to make Mary grab the phone.

“Tessie? What’s wrong?”

“Mommy?” Tessie whimpered. “Come home…please, Mommy.” Her voice caught.

A weight pressed against Mary’s chest. “Tell me what’s wrong, sweetie.” She gripped the edge of her apron, balling it in her hand as the seconds dragged by.

“Grannie…won’t…wake up.”
